Hounds of Marrow County Gnomes and Marks Guide

Fourteen hundred Marks per gnome—if you survive what remembers you.

Gnomes and Marks

Gnomes are the loudest risk/reward hook in Hounds of Marrow County. Officially: break one and they remember; they are relentless and will charge you with all sorts of weaponry; every gnome is worth 1,400 Marks—a sizable day’s pay. This guide explains when that payout is smart, when it is greed, and how Marks from gnomes compare to the safer animal loop.

Prerequisites matter. Finish Getting Started, stabilize Hunting and Skinning, set a lodge waypoint in Lodge and Trophies, and respect Night Survival. Companion behavior during chases: Dogs and Companions. Hub: Guides.

What a gnome break really costs

The sticker price looks amazing. Fourteen hundred Marks can fund guns, attachments, or lodge goals that would take multiple careful animal trips. The hidden price is memory and violence. Once you break a gnome, expect aggression—not a free vending machine.

Translate the official warning into play rules:

  • Assume revenge is coming, not optional flavor.
  • Assume weapons are involved, not cute slapstick only.
  • Assume the fight can follow you farther than you planned.
  • Assume night makes the same mistake worse.

If you cannot articulate an escape path before you swing, you are not farming—you are gambling.

Marks math without fake spreadsheets

Compare income sources honestly:

  • Animals — Reliable. Hunt, skin, sell. Volume scales with route knowledge and dog synergy. See Hunting and Skinning.
  • Fishing — Quieter side income when contested or cautious.
  • Gnomes — Spike income at 1,400 Marks each, paid in threat.

A “sizable day’s pay” means one successful gnome event can equal a long animal grind. It also means one failed revenge chase can delete that day’s animal progress if you were carrying skins. Bank animal Marks first. Enter gnome attempts with pockets you can afford to lose.

When to farm gnomes

Farm when most of these are true:

  1. You have completed multiple clean hunt-skin-sell cycles today.
  2. Your lodge waypoint is set and you know the run-home line.
  3. Your gun playstyle is stable under pressure (fifteen-plus guns exist—use one you trust).
  4. Your mutt role matches the plan—survival lean helps escapes; pure hunting aggression can escalate. See Dogs and Companions.
  5. You are not already deep into a dangerous night with full unsold inventory.
  6. You have a rule for aborting: if the chase turns ugly, you drop the objective and leave.

Optional: check Updates after patches in case gnome behavior or payouts change in Alpha 1.73+.

When to avoid gnomes

Skip or delay when:

  • It is your first session (Getting Started still open in another tab).
  • You are learning dog spacing and still dying to ordinary animals.
  • Dusk is minutes away and you have not sold skins (Night Survival).
  • Server chaos is high (up to 16 players) and you cannot read who else might third-party the fight.
  • You are emotionally tilted after deaths—revenge farming while tilted multiplies mistakes.
  • You hoped codes or scripts would replace fundamentals—Codes and Scripts are side tools, not gnome insurance.

Linking gnomes to hunting and night

Gnomes are not a separate mini-game floating above the forest. They sit on top of the same map language as hunting.

Hunting crossover

  • Clear nearby animals before you break, or you invent a multi-front disaster.
  • Do not skin in the open during a revenge window.
  • Prefer gnome attempts when your Marks needs are specific (gun upgrade, lodge goal), not when you are bored.

Night crossover

Officially, night does not tax you like day, yet it is not just animals after dusk. Adding gnome revenge into that mix is how runs end. If you must attempt a night gnome, carry minimal unsold value and treat the lodge as the only win condition once shots start landing. Deeper night habits: Night Survival.

Escape-first tactics

Play the objective backward. The win is Marks secured, not gnome destroyed while dead.

  1. Mark the lodge path mentally before contact.
  2. Break only when you have stamina, ammo confidence, and space.
  3. The moment revenge commitment exceeds your plan, disengage.
  4. Use the mutt to support the retreat, not to proudly duel forever.
  5. Sell or stash value as soon as the spike is yours.

Your lodge is the reset button—customize and waypoint it so panic has a destination (Lodge and Trophies).

Loadout notes for gnome attempts

  • Bring the gun you hit with under stress, not the novelty piece.
  • Attachments should stabilize handling or visibility weaknesses you already felt while hunting.
  • Avoid experimenting with a brand-new playstyle on a 1,400-Mark objective.
  • If the Tier List ranks a gun highly but you cannot aim it, it is not your gnome gun.

Session templates

Safe spike

Daylight → animal bankroll → sell → lodge check → single gnome attempt → immediate disengage path → sell/upgrade.

Hard avoid day

Death streak → contested routes → dusk approaching → fish or short hunts only → zero gnome breaks.

Veteran multi-break (advanced)

Only after repeated survivals. Space attempts so revenge windows do not stack into an unwinnable parade. Abort early if the forest is already loud.

Common gnome mistakes

  • Breaking “for fun” with a backpack full of skins
  • Ignoring dog personality during the chase
  • Fighting on bad footing instead of running to known terrain
  • Treating 1,400 as guaranteed income instead of contested income
  • Blaming the game after skipping every prerequisite guide

How gnomes fit the wider wiki

Gnomes are Marrow County saying the forest has a sense of humor and a memory. Take the 1,400 Marks when your fundamentals are sharp. Walk past the little statues when they are not. The hunters who last are the ones who know the difference. Return to the Guides Hub when you want the next system.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for hunters in Marrow County.

How many Marks is a gnome worth?

Each gnome is worth 1,400 Marks—described as a sizable day’s pay. The tradeoff is revenge: they remember and can charge with weapons.

Should beginners break gnomes?

Usually no. Bank Marks from hunting and skinning first, set a lodge waypoint, and learn night risk. Attempt gnomes when you can abort a chase cleanly.

Do gnomes interact badly with night?

Yes. Night already includes threats beyond animals. Adding gnome revenge after dusk is a common way to lose a full session’s progress.

Are gnomes better income than hunting?

Per success, a gnome can outpace many animal trips. Per failure, it can wipe you. Animals are the reliable baseline; gnomes are spikes.
